DUBRUCQ

In order to provide a short-term response to the lack of quality education, the Brussels Government Architect is launching an appeal for the transformation of a former office building into a school at Jean Dubrucqlaan in Brussels. VERS.A has presented a proposal in which the existing structure of the building is the guiding principle. Selective demolition aims to open up the spaces and introduce light into the core of the building. Spatially, the dated office building did not correspond to the intended programme, but structurally it was in good condition. In order to extend the service life of materials, the team chose to reuse as many elements as possible. Existing structural elements such as beams and columns reflect the style of the new classrooms. The design is specifically adapted to the timing, limited budget and programme, as demonstrated by the choice of materials, the light open classrooms and circulation route which is designed as a meeting place.
