The project involved the conversion of a former school building into a boarding school for the pupils of the Prins Dries School and the Flemish Ballet School. The design was meant to combine the fragile living environment of ballet school children with the vibrant existence of students. The architects not only transformed the classrooms into a refectory, living space and bedrooms, they also focused on the entire building and facades. In doing so, they aimed to strike a balance between the robust environment and the homely ambiance required for the interior. In order to create a welcoming environment for the children, the architects worked with materials rich in colour and texture. The green plinth, the white-plastered façade, the champagne-coloured windows and the scale of the building give the impression of a large town house. The building and its residents may be strangers in the neighbourhood, but they definitely contribute to community building.
