META ARCHITECTUURBUREAU - BORGERHOUT

Kleuterschool Xaveriuscollege

By combining different residual plots of land in the inner area of the building block, sufficient surface area was created for the implementation of a kindergarten, comprising 11 kindergarten classrooms, support facilities and adequate outdoor playground space. The infill project uses the urban space to maximum effect. Despite the irregular shape of the overall plot, META has designed an unambiguous structure, which shapes and acts as the mainstay of the area, creating a number of informal outdoor spaces which the architects use as ‘teaching gardens’ based on various educational topics. A straightforward circulation scheme guides you around the building, an obvious prerequisite for a kindergarten. At the Stenenbrug end, the main structure reflects the cornice heights of the surrounding buildings and incorporates a number of stacked functions such as classrooms, offices and gymnasium. In the 'tail end' of the building, the other kindergarten classrooms are located on the ground floor to ensure that the smallest toddlers do not have to use stairs.
