Hoogstraten Klein Seminarie

The RE-ST project involved the design of four public plinths that act as a transition between the austere, closed façade of the front building of the Klein Seminarie to the public Vrijheid, the main street in Hoogstraten. The configuration of the Seminary is based on an austere inward-facing architecture, which does not align with the open vision the school aims to convey. The project is part of the extensive restoration of the listed Voorgebouw (Front Building). Having monument status limits the possibilities. The plinths ensure that the school fits into the urban fabric and gives something back to the public space. The soft light colour contrasts with the closed façade, without losing its connection with it. Various objects draw the use of colour, abundantly present in the interior, through to the outside, as an inviting gesture. The plinths are located at seating height incorporating benches and dustbins so that at peak times, i.e. before and after school, they provide an alternative to the public space. Both pupils and passers-by can use the plinths. The terraces can also be used for public events.
