Marie-Jansonplein, also referred to as Carré Moskou (Moscow Square) is located at the heart of Saint-Gilles. The square will be reconstructed in 2020. Meanwhile, Toestand has implemented a temporary installation on the square to enhance this public space. It challenges residents to create a vision for the future and reflect on potential uses of this space. Residents have been given the opportunity to stage activities such as food trucks, a public radio station, a clothing sale or a communal compost heap on the square. There is always something going on, which actually brings the residents closer together. It is not only a collective source of ideas, but also a meeting place for the city. The organisation hopes that some initiatives will be retained. The enjoyable ambiance and interesting installations make it a place that is definitely worth a visit. It highlights the innovative and artistic side of Brussels and each visit is a different experience.
This project was opened on the occasion of the 2019 Day of Architecture. The text is based on a contribution by Lauren Overlaet.
