Vierwinden garden, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek

The opening of the Vierwinden Garden in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek was of unquestionable benefit to the neighbourhood. BAUKUNST broke through the walls of the local school’s play¬ground to create a communal space in the densely built-up urban fabric. This public garden was planted with fruit trees and given a pavilion that also serves as a canopy for a covered playground. Pierced by trees in several well-chosen places, the concrete roof of the structure appears to be floating. As a result of the enclosed nature of the space and the meticulous position¬ing of this concrete waffle canopy, this space also becomes like an open-air room, which the architects themselves refer to as adding substantial value. Unfortunately, the somewhat concealed entrances to the garden not only cre¬ate a secure feel, but also allow vandal¬ism to take place unnoticed. But the Vierwinden garden above all offers a new place where local residents can meet each other, organise events and reappropriate the public space.
