The Kanunnik Petrus Jozef Triestplein on the Karus site in Melle (formerly the Caritas Psychiatric Centre) took shape as a result of a study by BAVO into the psychiatric centre of the future. Following conversations with all the users, the Sint-Jozef building in the middle of the campus was saved from complete demolition and transformed into an activity zone for patients, visitors and staff to a design by architecten de vylder vinck taillieu. It was meant to be a place with no specific function, so that the users of the campus could make whatever use of the space they liked. The architects stripped this monumental ruin and repaired it where necessary. In addition, a number of the floorswere partly cut away and a series of glasshouses, a tree and a lamppost were added. The existing veranda at the front of the building was mirrored at the back; a new plinth extends round the building to modulate the transition between outside and inside.
