The exhibition Ensembles reveals, through various European projects and material from the architectural archives of the Flanders Architecture Institute, how the collaboration between designers and makers can lead to new solutions.
Craftsmanship is often associated with a sense of nostalgia, and with the kind of workmanship that has disappeared from contemporary building. But craftsmanship can also be a key to architectural innovation: by combining traditional techniques with new technologies and sustainable solutions, or by reassessing the organization of thought processes and handwork.
The exhibition Ensembles reveals, through various European projects and material from the architectural archives of the Flanders Architecture Institute, how the collaboration between designers and makers can lead to new solutions. It is a form of cooperation that enriches all involved: from the architect who feels a renewed appreciation for his profession, to the builder who receives recognition for his craftsmanship.
Ensembles also explores the poetry that can arise out of such collaborations. Architectural situations and objects tell their own story: a collection of window frames born out of a collaboration between architecture students and pupils in vocational training; an installation that exposes the beauty of the welded seam in the fabric of a building; or an object, made by a mason, that shows the infinite number of possibilities for bringing a brick to life.
While at deSingel you can also visit the Flanders Architecture Institute to view the result of a design exercise by textile designer Nathalie Van der Massen. She has devised a new fabric design inspired by the archives of the interior architects Bataille & ibens.
