On Saturday 26 May Flanders and The Netherlands join hands to present their architectural reviews at the Biennale Architettura 2018. Both publications examine new approaches in architecture that are related to long-term cultural developments, which are closely aligned with the notion of FREESPACE. During the presentation we will discuss the role of the architect in Europe and beyond.

The majority of the buildings in the Flanders Architectural Review N°13 have in common that they offer a wholly unexpected spatial and formal response to change. The contributors to this book do not only consider them to be good buildings, but also testing grounds that externalise the shifting conditions in which architecture operates. In the Dutch yearbook, Architecture in the Netherlands 2017/2018, a striking tendency is seen towards privatisation of formerly public projects such as social housing, as well as the growing aspiration of various private patrons (both individuals and developers) to provide high-quality public projects and spaces.

In this presentation at the Biennale Architettura 2018, members of the two editorial committees engage in a conversation on the future potential of these transformations in the context of the Lowlands and Europe in general.
