Op donderdag 22 oktober organiseren PAF en KU Leuven faculteit Architectuur een gespreksavond over Collective care in design education: Rethinking habits from the studio to the auditorium and back.
Collective Care in Design Education is the first in a series of travelling conversations organised by PAF in collaboration with architecture and design schools across Flanders and Brussels. Together, we explore how a feminist and intersectional perspective can contribute to more inclusive, diverse and caring forms of design education.
This first conversation focuses on methods of collective care in design education. Starting from the experiences of students and teachers, this conversation explores how we can foster a culture of care from the studio to the auditorium and back. Which habits can we rethink, and what new methods can we try? Together, we reflect on how small shifts in everyday educational practices can contribute to transforming design education.

Moderator
Irene Feria Prados is an architectural worker, teacher and researcher based in Brussels. Her work explores how spatial design can contribute to more just, inclusive, and situated ways of living by addressing realities often overlooked in architectural discourse—particularly those shaped by gender, race, and class.
Speakers
Virginia Sonko Fati (2002) is studying architecture at the University of Antwerp and is currently completing her degree. Her interests lie in culture, renovation and diversity, with the ambition to contribute to greater visibility and space for women architects of colour within the profession in the future.
Liesbeth Huybrechts is Professor in the areas of participatory design, design anthropology and socio-environmental transformation processes in the research group Civic and Policy Design, Arck, University of Hasselt, Belgium. She has developed a research interest in the design for/with participatory exchanges between human and the material/natural environment and the “politics” of designing these relations in just ways.
Jan Bleyen
Anthropological historian Jan Bleyen is a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven (Sint-Lucas Campus Ghent and Brussels). Both in his teaching (Human and Society and Anthropology of Architecture) and in his writing practice (including Stillborn and One Day I Will Be Someone), listening is central to his work, as he explores how people make meaning, particularly in vulnerable situations.
Sam De Vocht (°1981) is an architect, urban ecologist and researcher. He teaches at UAntwerpen, TU Delft and EKA Tallinn. Sam is co-founder of The Green Corridor Brussels (Saint-Gilles, 2022) and Huis Marie-José Van Hee (Ghent, 2026), where he brings the architect’s work into dialogue with other architectural and artistic practices.
The evening accompanies the installation Chronografictie by Helen Van de Vloet. Chronografictie is a speculative exploration of future scenarios for practice-based education, initiated by the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven. The project consists of a collection of observations, questions and visualisations designed to encourage reflection and action. The project concludes with two mirrored table settings on the Brussels and Ghent campuses, where midday conversations between students, teachers, educational staff and alumni will be organized over the course of 20 consecutive days.
