The GOING PUBLIC programme of the Faculty of Architecture of the KU Leuven is highlighting the current debates in the studios, courses and research groups. By showing the work done and testing ideas in an international context, the programme brings both international discourse to the faculty and -vice versa- internal discussions to the world. It consists of a lecture series, exhibitions and publications.
Design can be uniting, soothing, provoking, pleasing or disturbing. In times when there are so many urgent societal and environmental issues in need of systemic change, spatial design can add some crucial insights in, and contributions to these complexities. The Faculty of Architecture of KU Leuven with campuses in Ghent and Brussels, is fully aware of its place in the current global arena. It is creating and disseminating knowledge on architecture, urbanism and the architect’s possible roles in society.
The Going Public’ lectures are open for everyone and free of charge.

Joris Putteneers and Fieldstation Studio will guide you through several of their projects and collaborations, presented as a compressed, data rich, performative and speculative media trip reflecting on our post-digital condition.
In order to navigate this contemporary state, they expand the architectural toolbox of their practices with computational design, data visualisation, sensors, machine learning and artificial intelligence, data scraping and narrative and time-based media. The lecture will explore the agency of emerging technologies and media and their impact on the culture and practice of architecture, and how they mediate our relations with each other and our environments.

Wandering along a Limit – Mira Sanders
I think about the idea of wandering along (a) limit(s) and the ensuing question: How can you form (an) image(s) of a wandering along a limit(s)? I see this red thread as a path to follow, to question, to refer to over time and to deviate from if necessary. Through touch, sight, hearing and smell, I accumulate knowledge about what is happening now, near to (and far from) the road. On the road, I experiment with different work formulas that enable me to recompose my images/imagination in a different layout. Everything leads you to reconsider the notion of wandering and to think about its definition and its various representations.
Walks, Bodies, Mappings and Architecture – Import export Architecture – Oscar Rommens and An Vanderveken
Under the title ‘Walks that changed the course of history’, the TU Borders and Territories research group has selected a number of walks which are translated into maps offering a reading of the underlying spatial processes ensuing. Within the practice of import export Architecture, the walk, the experience of navigating through a building, plays a fundamental role in the spatial and material development of multiple projects. The routing from point A to point B is not so much determined by the most optimal route, but rather by the ever-changing relationship between the ‘moving’ body, what one sees and experiences, and the built space.

HARQUITECTES and BLAF architecten are (re)searching practices, in which the impact of the challenges and policies regarding climate, energy and raw materials on the design, construction and affordability of architecture are prominent themes.
HARQUITECTES is an architecture studio founded in 2000 by David Lorente, Josep Ricart, Xavier Ros and Roger Tudó. They combine their professional activity teaching in the ETSAV- UPC, ETSAB- UPC, ETH Zurich and Harvard GSD. They have been invited to Porto Academy, AA School of architecture, Austin School of Architecture, Universidad Católica de Chile, ENSA Paris, Umea school of architecture, among other places. They have received several national and international awards and their work has been widely published and exhibited.
Engagement, research and intuition are what drives BLAF architecten. They reflect the social, scientific and emotional charge of design. Engagement leads to responsibility, research to innovation and intuition to signature. BLAF is known for its small-scale experimental productions in the form of (geometrical) case study houses, which has led to several (circular) innovations in hybrid construction methods and products (BLAF Big Brick hybrids). BLAF takes this practical experience in building with it in numerous large-scale and urban planning assignments.
