Mediating [Infra]Structures lanceert tweede luik over Transport Hubs

Met een reeks debatten en workshops plaatst Mediating [Infra]Structures een nieuwe focus op onze hedendaagse collectieve ruimten. Op woensdag 14 oktober voelen Nicolas Firket (NFA), Ruth Soenen en Christian Salewski (Airports and Cities) in het Noordstation van Brussel onze transport hubs aan de tand.

Mediating [Infra]Structures is een driedelige debattenreeks die een nieuwe focus wil plaatsen op onze hedendaagse ‘collectieve ruimten’, door drie types ervan - shopping centra, transport hubs en culturele centra – met telkens een ‘in situ’ publiek debat aan de tand te voelen.

Mediating [Infra]Structures gaat na of de veronderstelde teloorgang van de publieke sfeer kan omgekeerd worden in deze collectieve ruimten, en of ze als ‘mediating [infra]structures’ kunnen bijdragen tot de formatie van een nieuw ‘publiek’ domein. In deze collectieve ruimten, die zijn ontstaan in de tweede helft van de 20ste eeuw, is de scheiding tussen publiek en privé, productie en consumptie, het individuele en het collectieve, immers onduidelijk. Deze onbepaaldheid geeft aan deze drie typologieën ‘mediërende’ capaciteiten, die hen in staat stellen om aan de hedendaagse samenleving een ‘common ground’ aan te reiken.

Een eerste debat over shopping centra vond in juni reeds plaats. Voor een tweede debat trekt Mediating [Infra]Structures naar het Brusselse Noordstation. Architect Nicolas Firket van NFA, momenteel betrokken in het stedelijk project van de buurt rond Brussel Zuid, stedenbouwkundige en onderzoeker Christian Salewski, medeoprichter van het onderzoeksplatform Airports and Cities, en antropologe Ruth Soenen van Simply Community gaan er op woensdagavond 14 oktober met elkaar in gesprek over het mediërend potentieel van onze stations en transport gebouwen. Lara Schrijver modereert het gesprek.

Het opzet:
Transport hubs such as railway stations, airports, bus and train terminals are often dismissed as ‘non-places’, uniform, anonymous, functionally furnished places with people always on the move, where social relationships remain insignificant. However, not everyone shares this unsettling opinion. Transport hubs according to British architect and writer Brian Edwards, are complex social places that could be considered a new form of community hub, as their generous concourses draw in people from different social strata. But how can transport hubs facilitate encounters and encourage meaningful interaction?
Mediating [Infra]Structures tries to forgo the pessimistic approach towards transport hubs by questioning what types of human interaction take place in these spaces, and how their transitory nature could be conceived as relevant social space that still hold some public meaning and a potential for public-ness.The ability (or inability) of the transport hub to function as shared social space by ‘mediating’ interactions of its transient users is examined with a focus on the spatial concepts inherent in spaces of mass transport.

In het verlengde van het debat over Transport Hubs als Mediating [Infra]Structures zullen er in de loop van oktober en november ook enkele workshops en lesmomenten plaatsvinden over het thema, in het kader van the public school for architecture brussels.
