Architecture that creates social worlds does not take itself as its own starting point. It latches onto the specific nature of the spatial context and uses the principal’s requirements and the users’ expectations as a driving force in the design. These projects, oriented towards ‘spending time’, are brought to life in written and visual essays in the 11th Architectural Review Flanders.

The biennial Architectural Review Flanders presents a huge variety of architecture: buildings on different scales, with a broad range of programmes and users, sometimes with completely opposite spatial aims. Yet they have a lot in common. They were all conceived as social environments that take the knowledge and expectations of clients and users seriously. The architecture itself is never out of the picture. Designers rethink spatial configurations, and seek formal and material solutions that are able to make the most varied forms of accommodation livable. But it is not only in reflective writings that the projects are presented. They are also brought to life in a special visual essay by the Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert.
