Symposium Re-City: the total "makover" of the European City

It is about the transformation of the existing and the way in which new collaborations emerge out of this transformative task.

The European urban condition stands out from those of the rest of the world. Currently, the European population is shrinking and ageing faster than any other world-region, but this does not prevent the growing push for the city. Europe currently leads the rest of the world in reaching the 75-90-3 split. Thus, the next collective core responsibility and challenge for city makers must lie explicitly in the existing city. In re-city rather then new-city.

Re-City is about the transformation, renovation and re-invention of our cities. It can only be achieved through an all-in-one scheme of any scale, any alliance, any approach and any 'rules and regulations' rather than the rigid enforcement of densification or the pushing-through of big projects. Re-city starts from the city itself, driven not by the core values of individual initiatives nor by those of top down politics or planning, but emerging instead out of cityness. It works through specific collaborations and alliances of politicians, developers, investors, architects, designers, scientists, entrepreneurs, advisors and the people next door; driven by the possibilities, the urgent issues, chances and changes that occur in, or need to be done, about the existing city. This is about remaking our cities, like a total European makeover. The following architects, politicians and developers will debate this argument Henk Ovink:
