The faculty of Engineering and Architecture has a vacancy for a professorship, starting from September 1, 2021.
It concerns a full-time position as Professor in the rank of Assistant Professor (docent, Tenure Track) or Associate Professor (hoofddocent) in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, charged with academic teaching, scientific research and carrying out scientific duties in the field of Material-Cultural History of Architectural Practice.
Academic education
You lecture various course units in the discipline of Material-Cultural History of Architectural Practice within a comprehensive program in architectural design, supported by the technical and scientific knowledge of the engineer and by the historical and theoretical knowledge of the broad context of architecture and urbanism. Teaching assignments will include courses on both Bachelor and Master level, from broad or introductory courses, to thematic research seminars and the supervision of master dissertations. You will be required to provide both theoretically orientated and practice-based teaching. Building a strong relationship with and participation in design-related courses and design studios is central to the assignment. The teaching should be linked to the broader sustainability goals forwarded by Ghent University in her policy plans. In this regard, setting up collaborations with other training programs will be stimulated.
Academic Research
You conduct research in the discipline of Material-Cultural History of Architectural Practice. We expect this research to be complementary to the ongoing research in the field of Theory and History of Architecture and Urbanism, conducted within the Department, while it should be informed by recent developments in the historiography of architecture, more specifically in scholarship addressing the relationship between architecture, nature and (material) ecologies. From a broad cultural and historical perspective, we expect the research also to address current challenges in architectural practice, with respect to notions like sustainability, comfort and circular building economies. In this regard, the research conducted should entail setting up collaborations with research units within the Department (such as the Building Physics group or researchers working on architectural design theory), as well as within the Faculty (such as the Department of Structural Engineering and Building Materials) or within the Ghent University at large, while we also expect the selected candidate to participate in and set up international research projects and collaborations. We also invite him/her to conduct active prospection in the wider milieu of relevant societal actors (from policy makers to industry) in developing research and seeking research funding.
Academic services
You take part in the internal and external service provision of the department of Architecture and Urban Planning.
