De vorm en toekomst van steden wordt vandaag steeds meer gezien als het resultaat van onvermijdelijke processen: de strategische beslissingen van bedrijven, de voorkeur van de consument, diepgewortelde culturele reflexen. Met name door de opmars van een neoliberale en neoconservatieve blik op de samenleving, worden fundamentele beslissingen over de leefomgeving op die manier steeds meer bepaald door de wet van vraag en aanbod of de clash der beschavingen. Is er binnen een dergelijk klimaat nog ruimte voor een democratische stedelijke politiek? Hoe kunnen verongelijkte groepen nog uiting geven aan hun ongenoegen? En hoe kan de ontwikkeling van een stad opnieuw worden gestuurd door een collectief politiek project in plaats van winstmarges of verdeelsleutels?
Het architectuurtheoretisch bureau BAVO nodigde een groep van sociaal-geografen, sociologen, filosofen, planners, architecten en designers uit om te reflecteren over de huidige ontkenning van de stedelijke politiek. Urban Politics Now biedt een diepgaande analyse van de plaag van symptomen die hiermee gepaard gaan, zoals zinloos geweld, nultolerantie, consumptief hedonisme en socio-economische polarisatie. Daarnaast worden ook manieren verbeeld om de stad opnieuw tot een motor te maken van een democratische politiek met een emancipatoir programma, in plaats van één die de status quo bevestigt.
Hoewel alle bijdragen een globale reikwijdte hebben, is er een specifieke focus op recente stedelijke ontwikkelingen in Nederland.
The form and future of cities is increasingly regarded as the product of inescapable processes: the strategic decisions of businesses, consumer preferences, deeply rooted cultural reflexes. Specifically, with the rise of a neoliberal and neo-conservative view of society, fundamental decisions about the everyday environment are increasingly determined by the laws of supply and demand or the clash of cultures. Is there still a place for democratic urban politics in such a climate? How can disenfranchised groups express their dissatisfaction? How can a city's development be steered by a collective political project again, instead of profit margins or economic formulae?
The BAVO bureau for architectural theory invited a group of social geographers, sociologists, philosophers, planners, archi-tects and designers to reflect on the current repudiation of urban politics. Urban Politics Now offers an in-depth analysis of the plague of symptoms that are associated with this, such as gratuitous violence, zero tolerance, consumptive hedonism, socioeconomic polarization. It also proposes ways to re--establish the city as the driver of democratic politics with an emancipatory agenda, rather than one that ratifies the status quo.
All the contributions are globally relevant, but there is a specific focus on recent urban developments in the Netherlands.
