RUST

A permanent work of art is being erected by Boudy Verleye, Kobe Vandenberghe and Olivier Goethals at the Ter Ruste cemetery in Houthulst. Rust (Rest in peace), a monument in memory of the victims of suicide, was commissioned by the province of West Flanders and the Welfare Department and follows on from the Oe'ist prevention campaign. The monument will be located in a vacant section of the cemetery’s radial layout. The seemingly closed wall of the monument opens up to reveal a path, which leads to a room within a room within a room. The rooms are characterized by three different types of wall made of local field-kiln bricks. The rooms gradually become smaller and more enclosed. Nearer the centre of the monument, the path runs closer to the walls with open butt joints. These weep holes can be used to leave a message. In the smallest room, a low wall provides a place to sit down.

This project was opened on the occasion of the 2017 Day of Architecture.
