KAAN Architects developed the Siesegem crematorium as an overall concept, a symbiosis between the building and its immediate surroundings. Elements such as the shape of the terrain, orientation and accessibility ensure a logical configuration, creating a sense of the building being at one with its immediate surroundings. The architecture of the crematorium metaphorically and physically facilitates the transition from a hectic world outside to a quiet and subdued interior. Despite the complex logistics of a crematorium, the building has a natural feel. The architecture is not merely a succession of spaces but offers spatial orientation to ensure that visitors never feel lost. The interior evokes emotions, introduces calm and encourages reflection. The Siesegem Crematorium building has a flawless geometry and balanced proportions. A lucid environment and peaceful landscape merge and radiate tranquillity. Nature and daylight counterbalance the intense moments of sorrow.
