On the edge of the urban Falconplein (Falcon Square) and an intimate courtyard, 51N4E is developing six single-family dwellings and one commercial building within a set of existing and new buildings. Internal linking of the programme allows for the generous use of the space available within a very limited area. As a result, the quality of living is not related to the amount of space but to its intensification and plurality. The listed 16th-century gatehouse overlooking Falconplein will be fully restored back to its original state and complemented with new structural layers. At the rear, along the narrow alley leading to the courtyard, a new detached building will be introduced. In the space created in between, an external staircase will open onto the alley and courtyard, acting as an interface between residents and passers-by. 51N4E is thus converting a previously wasted space into a valuable asset for the city, i.e. an exposed interior people happen to pass and observe accidentally.
