Dit project omvat drie gerichte ingrepen aan de oostelijke gevelzijde van het ‘De Bijloke Muziekcentrum Gent’: het beperken van oververhitting in de artiestenfoyer, het verbeteren van de wind- en waterdichtheid aan de publieksingang bij het café, en het verhogen van de toegankelijkheid. Het gebouw heeft een publieke functie en ligt in een stedelijke context met een uitgesproken historische identiteit. Het ontwerp getuigt van een diep ruimtelijk engagement met de fysieke en sociale context. Door een zorgvuldige lezing van de bestaande structuur werd gekozen voor hergebruik en zo minimale ingrepen. Zo werd bij de artiestenfoyer een nieuwe structuur over de bestaande gevel geschoven, wat de afbraak beperkt en de circulaire materiaalstroom optimaliseert. De ingreep werd uitgevoerd met het oog op het behoud van de werking van het gebouw tijdens de werken. De materiaalkeuze – vergrijsd hout uit duurzame bosbouw – versterkt de tactiele, tijdloze en inclusieve kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en biedt een tegengewicht voor generieke glasarchitectuur. Beide gevelaanpassingen spreken dezelfde architecturale taal, met ritmering en schaal die zich verhouden tot de historische context. De ingrepen dragen bij aan een verhoogde klimaatrobuustheid, toegankelijkheid en sociale bruikbaarheid, en vormen een concrete ruimtelijke oplossing voor maatschappelijke uitdagingen zoals klimaatadaptatie, erfgoedzorg en inclusie.

This project comprises three targeted interventions on the eastern façade of the “De Bijloke Music Centre Ghent”: limiting overheating in the performers' foyer, improving wind and water tightness at the public entrance near the café, and increasing accessibility. The building has a public function and is located in an urban context with a distinct historical identity. The design demonstrates a deep spatial engagement with the physical and social context. Through a careful reading of the existing structure, the choice was made to reuse and thus minimise interventions. At the artists' foyer, for instance, a new structure was slid over the existing façade, limiting demolition and optimising the circular flow of materials. The intervention was carried out with a view to preserving the functioning of the building during the works. The choice of materials - greyed wood from sustainable forestry - enhances the tactile, timeless and inclusive qualities of the design and provides a counterbalance to generic glass architecture. Both façade adaptations speak the same architectural language, with rhythm and scale that relate to the historic context. The interventions contribute to increased climate resilience, accessibility and social usability, and provide a concrete spatial solution to societal challenges such as climate adaptation, heritage care and inclusion.
