The city of Antwerp wanted to make the new Kielplein a place with a distinct identity and strong visual quality. The canopy is an urban work of art that clearly marks out the new shopping square whose form uplifts the straightforward arrangement of the street. Only the future will make clear whether this powerful signal – together with other renovations – can act as a lever to get the whole neighbourhood functioning.
