Gemeenschapscentrum Spikkerelle

Dierendonckblancke architecten
Avelgem
Spikkerelle community centre

Spikkerelle stands in the landscape like a sterile object on the line dividing the built-up village centre from the De Meersen nature reserve. The building looks detached from its surroundings, but is at the same time fully rooted in it, as shown by the sculptural base that is dug deep into the slope of the site.
Whereas in Schuiferskapelle DMM subtly balances such seemingly contradictory concepts as innovative and traditional, and exceptional and familiar, the Dierendonckblancke approach in Avelgem is not so much about subtlety as monumentality and contrast.
