Het project betreft een nieuwe sociale woonbuurt en kadert in de verdichting van de stadskern in Geel. De term ‘sociale huisvesting’ wordt zowel op menselijk als op ruimtelijk-architecturaal vlak nog vaak geassocieerd met de term kansloos ipv. kansrijk. Het project ‘Wijdbosch’ toont aan dat het anders kan. Ondanks een beperkt budget is Wijdbosch een verfijnd en boeiend ruimtelijk ensemble geworden dat het individueel welbevinden en het buurtleven ondersteunt.
De frisse, leesbare aanblik van de nieuwe buurt wordt bekomen door volumetrische, typologische variatie en een doordachte omgang met eenvoudige gevelmaterialen. Terwijl de ‘rijwoningen’ een voorspelbare rij langsheen de woonerfstraten vormen, zijn de ‘tuinwoningen’ achter elkaar gekoppeld langsheen kruiwagenpaden dwars op de woonerfstraten. Er ontstaat een luchtig en ritmisch straatbeeld. Hogere volumes met appartementen markeren de overgang tussen woonerf en straat en tussen woonerf en park. De hogere kopgebouwen geven de buurt een ‘smoel’ aan de parkzijde, ruime terrassen bieden een royale aanblik. De architectuur stimuleert interactie en versterkt het publieke domein. Ontmoeting tussen bewoners wordt o.m. bevorderd door gedeelde carports en fietsenstallingen die tevens breed gebruikt kunnen worden voor buurtactiviteiten.
Door de wisselende opstelling van ‘rij- en tuinwoningen’ en de aanwezigheid van kruiwagenpaden is ook aan de intiemere tuinzijdes bewonersinteractie mogelijk. De rondboog-gaanderij aan de parkzijde nodigt parkgebruikers uit eronder beschutting te zoeken. Door de keuze voor repetitie, logische schakelingen, standaard materialen, beperkte overspanningen en eenvoudige detailleringen bleef de bouwkost beperkt en binnen de grenzen van de sociale huisvestingsnormen. Door low-budgetmaterialen met aandacht in te zetten, werd er gelaagdheid en verfijning in het gevelbeeld gebracht (hellende dakranden, betonstenen gevelplinten, geaccentueerde rollagen,...) die zorgen voor herkenbaarheid en huiselijkheid.

The fresh, legible appearance of the new neighbourhood is achieved through volumetric, typological variation and a well-thought-out use of simple façade materials. While the 'terraced houses' form a predictable row along the residential areas, the 'garden houses' are linked one after the other along wheelbarrow paths perpendicular to the residential areas. A light-hearted and rhythmic streetscape is created. Higher volumes with apartments mark the transition between residential area and street and between residential area and park. The taller end buildings give the neighbourhood a 'face' on the park side, spacious terraces offer a generous view. The architecture stimulates interaction and strengthens the public domain. Meeting between residents is promoted, among other things, by shared carports and bicycle sheds that can also be widely used for neighborhood activities.
Due to the changing arrangement of 'terraced and garden houses' and the presence of wheelbarrow paths, resident interaction is also possible on the more intimate garden sides. The round-arched gallery on the park side invites park users to seek shelter underneath. By opting for repetition, logic circuits, standard materials, limited spans and simple detailing, the construction cost remained limited and within the limits of the social housing standards. By using low-budget materials with attention, layering and refinement were brought into the façade image (sloping eaves, concrete stone façade skirting boards, accentuated roller layers,...) that ensure recognisability and homeliness.
