We come across an exceptional way of adding air and greenery to the streets of Ledeberg on the corner of Moriaanstraat and Veldwijkstraat; this is a project by Puls architects in association with architecture studio Benoît Ottevaere.
Here, it seems as if the corner is avoided as in the modernist tradition. The rows of terraced houses on both sides of the angle are prolonged, but stop before they touch and are able to form a corner. This gives rise to two separate, identical houses with a communal garden. Unlike the slab-like housing blocks seen in modern building, the end façades are not blank walls, but have large windows that offer long street perspectives. A garden wall provides a clear division between the public and private domains. The promised planting on the façade is yet to appear, but the concession of sky between the two buildings can already be enjoyed.
