Close to the market and shops in Wijnegem, ten senior citizens live independently, but together, in a protected residential environment. Elderly people can live alone or as a couple in these homes, designed by OSAR architects, with or without specific care services. The project consists of two new-build structures: a main building on the street side with 5 small residences behind providing independently run accommodation for one or two senior citizens. In the main building at the front, the architects have provided a small-scale day care facility, a communal kitchen and a living room on the ground floor. These are important meeting places for residents and their families. Together with the kitchen, the garden is the heart of the project. There is a sun terrace, benches and a gate to the caretaker's garden. The residents live together but respect each other’s privacy. The houses are designed to meet the specific needs of the residents. Care is available, but invisible. An attractive and comfortable living environment is paramount.
