Amphora Residential Care Centre, Wingene

Having gained a knowledge of the surroundings, the London architectural firm Sergison Bates designed a care home for the town of Wingene. The complex, which consists of homes for assisted living, resting rooms and a day-care centre, merges with the surrounding residential neighbourhood. Both the domestic scale reflected in the sloping tiled roofs and the use of traditional brick give the building a familiar appeal. Large circulation spaces are created by clustering the rooms in groups. The corridors are conceived as boulevards and make plenty of room for the residents and staff. Each housing unit has its own identity, but remains tethered to the whole ensemble. While the terraces allow light deep into the building, the inner garden can be seen from all sides. The patio is a covered arcade with a view of this garden. And while the ground floor makes access available for all the services provided from outside, the internal services are housed mainly on the upper floors.
