The design by GRAUX & BAEYENS architects comprises a painter’s and a sculptor's studio for Stief Desmet. The plot of considerable depth includes a family home on the street side, flanked on the left by a narrow brick outbuilding. The artist's current studio is located on the right-hand side. The site is characterised by organic building development that varies considerably in terms of materials and finish. The new studio consists of a primary double-height brick structure, partly embraced by lower secondary functions (study and kitchen). Together with the other buildings, the architects try to project a coherent design in which the whole supports the components. The materials used for the studio are similar to those for the main house, the adjacent secondary functions for the stables and outbuildings, without trying to copy them. The slanting location allows scope for a courtyard without being disconnected from the nature garden at the rear.
