Dit project omvat de afbraak en heropbouw van een voormalige arbeiderswoning in de Antwerpse wijk Seefhoek. De nieuwe structuur combineert een keramiekatelier op de begane grond met een compacte wooneenheid verspreid over de eerste en tweede verdieping. Het oorspronkelijke gebouw had ernstige structurele tekortkomingen, waaronder een kelder die functioneerde als septic tank, waardoor hergebruik van de bestaande structuur niet haalbaar was.
Met een bescheiden gevelbreedte van 3,7 meter en een kaveldiepte van 10,5 meter biedt het ontwerp een eigentijdse herinterpretatie van de typische arbeiderswoningen in de straat. Het nieuwe volume is opgebouwd rond een houten portiekstructuur die onregelmatig wordt herhaald over de diepte van het terrein. Dit ritmische kader definieert niet alleen het structurele systeem maar ook de interne ruimtelijke organisatie. Er is een duidelijk onderscheid gemaakt tussen functionele zones, zoals de trap, het toilet en de douche, en leefruimtes zoals de studio, keuken, woonkamer en slaapkamer. De achtergevel is licht verzonken, waardoor er ruimte is voor een kleine achtertuin en er natuurlijk water in de grond kan infiltreren. Dit gebaar introduceert ook een extra geveloppervlak aan de achterzijde, wat de daglichttoetreding verbetert en het interieur opent naar de buitenomgeving. Ondanks de beperkte oppervlakte genereert het ontwerp een verrassende ruimtelijke rijkdom, met licht gevulde, gevarieerde binnenruimtes.
Het hele project, van constructiesysteem tot fijne detaillering, kan worden gelezen als een opgeschaalde kast, waarbij het houten geraamte naadloos integreert met de binnenafwerking en het schrijnwerk. Het resultaat is een ontwerp dat zich nederig maar elegant voegt in het stedelijk weefsel en zowel de ruimtelijke kwaliteit als de leefbaarheid verbetert zonder afbreuk te doen aan de bescheiden schaal van de context.

This project involves the demolition and reconstruction of a former workers’ house in the Seefhoek district of Antwerp. The new structure combines a ceramic studio on the ground floor with a compact residential unit spread across the first and second floors. The original building suffered from severe structural deficiencies, including a basement that functioned as a septic tank, making reuse of the existing structure unfeasible.
With a modest façade width of 3.7 meters and a plot depth of 10.5 meters, the design offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the typical workers’ houses found in the street. The new volume is constructed around a timber portico structure, irregularly repeated along the depth of the site. This rhythmic framework defines not only the structural system but also the internal spatial organization. A clear distinction is made between functional zones, such as the staircase, toilet, and shower, and living spaces like the studio, kitchen, living room, and bedroom. The back wall is slightly recessed creating space for a small back garden and allowing for natural water infiltration into the ground. This gesture also introduces an additional façade surface on the backside, enhancing daylight penetration and opening the interior toward the outdoor environment. Despite the limited footprint, the design generates a surprising spatial richness, with light-filled, varied interior spaces.
The entire project, from structural system to fine detailing, can be read as a scaled-up closet, where the timber framework seamlessly integrates with the interior finishes and joinery. The result is a design that humbly yet elegantly inserts itself into the urban fabric, enhancing both spatial quality and livability without compromising the modest scale of its context.
